Goodbye Summer/Hello September

Goodbye Summer/Hello September

I find myself quite sad this year that summer is (nearly) over. I love summer, and I’ve really turned into a summer person the past few years, where I was firmly a spring person before. While we still have some lovely high temps forecasted, the geese are flying off and the leaves are turning. Dew is on the grass in the morning.

Autumn is around the corner and this is definitely summer’s last gasp. I do love Halloween and it’s my favourite holiday, so I always feel a bit bittersweet about summer ending. This summer in particular feels hard to say goodbye to. I think having summer with a two year old that has loved being in a community garden more than I ever thought possible has just been the highlight, and that’s what I’m saddest to see go. We have a few more weeks, especially if we don’t get an early frost. But I know the time is short.

We spent a few of our last weeks in summer hardcore potty training too, which has been successful but did limit some larger trips. We had struggled for a bit having no idea how to make that transition (Oh Crap by Jamie Glowaki was amazing, and I wish we had known about it six months ago). Although I am hoping with our newfound skills we’ll be able to make the 40 min drive to a U-Pick pumpkin patch this year. It’s one of those things I envision as a yearly family tradition, where the kiddo has fond memories of never not doing it.

I always feel like I don’t get to do as much as I had hoped in summer, but it’s not like I spent the whole time at home inside. We ran around, visited things and people, went to festivals; but next year I do hope we get to do more. Especially since potty training will be well and truly behind us, that frees us up quite a bit.

I absolutely did not do anywhere near as much dyeing as I thought I’d do this summer. I still have quite a bit of yardage that I had prepped for all this dyeing I thought I’d do. Tending a hot stove for hours with an extremely active two year old wasn’t frequently possible. I can dye in the fall and winter, and I still have a large slate of indigo planned that I want to cram in the next week or so. That I do prefer doing in the summer for practical reasons – I do it outside on the pebbled driveway so it doesn’t matter if I splash all over the place.

In terms of projects, the summer was punctuated by a lot of little things. Quilted things, bags, experimenting with embroidery a bit. All this stuff that eventually I will get around to posting here when I ever take pictures.

If you’ll excuse me, we have a few more high 20C days, and I plan to make the most of them while I can.
